Traditional vent: The vent is always open to allow code mandated air flow into the unoccupied attic or crawl space areas.
Traditional vent with fire: Fire and embers flow through a traditional foundation or eave vent, setting fire to the unoccupied areas of the house such as crawl spaces and attics.

Vulcan self-closing vent: Excellent air flow.
Vulcan self-closing vent with fire: When exposed to flames, the fire resistant coating on the honey combed mesh will intumesce (expand) and effectively fill the space between the hexagon cells, thereby creating an effective barrier.
